Kickoff is nearing for the US Women’s National Team in their latest friendly against fellow FIFA top-10 nation Australia. After an underwhelming SheBelieves Cup, the USWNT will be aiming to muster up some momentum heading into their remaining friendlies before their trip to France for the Women’s World Cup.
It’s been an up-and-down start to 2019 for the Americans under head coach Jill Ellis. They have only won twice in five games so far, drawing two and dropping one in the process. This isn’t the dominant team we’re used to seeing, even if they are ranked No. 1 in the world. There will be some interesting decisions ahead as their trip to France looms. With results not going the way they want, this match offers a great chance for experimentation with several more warm-up opportunities to come.
History is not on the side of the Aussies. They’ve only beaten the USA one time in the 29 meetings between these two teams. On top of that, the U.S. has never lost at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, winning four times and drawing once. There is cause for optimism, however. In their last match against the U.S., they earned a draw and were unlucky to not get the win as they allowed the last minute equalizer. Which team will build up their confidence for this summer? It should be an interesting night in Colorado.
